About the project

Women in Fisheries wanted to produce a meaningful video to increase the visibility of women in the UK’s fishing industry and inspire action for change.

As video producer, I worked alongside the talented filmmaker Chris Campkin, and esteemed researchers Alex Smalley and Dr Madeleine Gustavsson. Despite the challenges of lockdown, we successfully filmed four inspiring women located across Scotland and Cornwall, and the video was awarded second prize in the international Women in Seafood video competition.

We focused on the inspirational stories of the women and the varied roles they play in their fishing communities. Through ‘on the job’ interviews Elaine Black, Emma Rowse, Kerensa Dagnall, and Samantha Davis explained why they love their jobs, and what challenges they face.

What was my role?

My role as video producer included setting timelines and budgets; organising public liability insurance and risk assessments; call sheets for the videographer; negotiating permission for harbour shoots; delivering interviews, and overseeing the smooth running of shoots and schedules.

I coordinated with the women regularly to ensure they felt comfortable and understood how best to capture their stories on film. This helped me to draft and rehearse interview questions with each of them to ensure their individual stories triggered the right responses during the filming.

Post-shoot I shared these interview notes with timecodes to the team, helping to guide the shape of the film. The combined result is a meaningful and compassionate video that shows how crucial these women’s stories are to the survival of the UK’s small-scale fisheries industry.

And let’s not forget … the all-important coffee and breakfasts to get the team through the early morning and late evening shoots in all weathers!
